I chose Baptist for residency training as it is a premier institution for those wishing to enter private practice radiology in the southeastern US. During my interviews for both the Internship and Radiology programs, the familial nature of both programs paired with the supportive relationships between residents and attendings instantly sold me. My decision for residency was a no-brainer and I could not be happier with my choice.
A typical day in the life of a first year radiology resident is challenging but fun. We are typically in the reading rooms from 8-5 during the week. Each rotation lasts one month and we rotate through each of the subspecialties at least once per year. I try to study a little bit most evenings from various textbooks, usually tailored to whichever rotation I am currently on for the month. I will also often read more about an interesting case or finding I saw that day at work. It is incredibly fulfilling to be doing what I have always aimed to do in my career. Though the steep learning curve can be sometimes disheartening, seeing tangible growth day to day during training is a reward unto itself. That radiology is so intellectually stimulating is what drives my excitement for my career.
I had my first experience with radiology in high school and loved how the specialty draws on biology, chemistry, and physics to provide expertise in the modality of medical imaging. I also loved seeing how radiologists were often consulted by other physicians to draw on that expertise.
I would recommend Baptist/MSIT to anyone looking for a well rounded training experience at a program with a familial culture that pushes your growth as a budding radiologist. Our program provides moonlighting opportunities that you won't find elsewhere. It also helps that we have the best snacks thanks to our program coordinator.
